Reading List: May 2011

Every month I compile a list of new releases with L.A. authors or L.A. topics for LAmag.com. Last month was ladies’ month with a boat-load of actresses telling us their life stories. This month was the men’s turn, and these weren’t just any men — May’s list featured titles by and about some of the hottest male actors of nearly the last century: Rob Lowe, Robert Redford, and Cary Grant (I should also mention that my May list includes a book by one of the century’s nicest male actors, Dick Van Dyke). The cover and back flap pictures on the Rob Lowe memoir are enough to make you want to keep the hardcover edition on your bedside table (despite your husband’s quizzical looks), and it also happens to be a good read. Lowe is funny, self-deprecating, and candid (although he skims over the sex-tape episode rather quickly), and his charming prose will continually conjure that face in your head — so what could be bad? In an interesting coincidence, Lowe even mentions the few times he met the famous father of his friend, Jennifer Grant, and Lowe’s characterizations of the acting great are much better played than anything Jennifer Grant provides in her own (somewhat uninspiring) memoir about her father. Check out the rest of my May Reading List on LAmag.com.
